God works instant miracles but he’s also a God of processes. If you ever read through the entire story of the bible, you’ll see prophecies laced through the scriptures that took a long time to be fulfilled. It is worthy to note that not every miracle in the bible was instant, for example the exodus deliverance of the Israelites took 400 years to be fulfilled and there were other prophecies that were much longer. Nevertheless, God always had a plan and he worked behind the scenes weaving each story into a unified whole. (Rom. 8:28)
This understanding can be applied to our personal lives. God does miracles for us but there are many times he takes us through a process. Actually, to me the whole of life is a “process” with one focus in mind. After birth, we grow and mature all through life’s phases but most times maturity requires discipline, pain or sacrifice. We may even go through sufferings or persecution in life because of our faith in Jesus. Paul, the apostle said in Romans 8:18 “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us”.
In the same vein, with our sexuality God works in us to bring us to maturity, but it may require that we go through some pain or process in our healing journey. Maybe you’ve experienced childhood trauma, abuse or an addiction, the healing process may not be as fast as you would have liked, infact you may be currently experiencing temptations or relapse, but one thing you mustn’t forget is —you’re not alone. God is with you in your journey, and wants to strengthen you in the walk towards victory (Philip. 2:13), but you need to persevere and not give up. Think of the analogy of diamonds: they aren’t made in a day, they are formed deep within the Earth’s crust under conditions of intense heat and pressure that cause carbon atoms to crystallize (culled from capetowndiamondmuseum.org) . This can take billions of years to happen! Know this, you’re being refined each day and maturing to be all God wants you to be in your sexuality, relationship and life in general.
Our scripts of life may differ but they all lead to one purpose. Whenever you’re in a process, always remember that Jesus is the main focus and not just overcoming the particular situation or temptation. The reason for growth is to be molded into the image of Christ. We’re to know him and make him known through our lives. So, though life on earth has trials along the way, I want to encourage you today to stay the course, keep your eyes on the goal— Jesus.
“I’m not saying that I have this all together, that I have it made. But I am well on my way, reaching out for Christ, who has so wondrously reached out for me. So let’s keep focused on that goal, those of us who want everything God has for us. If any of you have something else in mind, something less than total commitment, God will clear your blurred vision – you’ll see it yet! Now that we’re on the right track, let’s stay on it.” Philippians 3:12. 15-16 (MSG)
